The Host

I went to TGV KLCC last Friday with Afeeq to catch a movie. Hmm... it's not summer movie season, so with limited choices (and I won't break my promise NOT to watch Cicakman), I insisted that we watch Korean's biggest box office of all time The Host, screened at 5.45pm. A monster movie, which, judging from the poster and trailer I saw in the internet, is quite promising. And some more, it's NOT a ghost movie (I've had more than enough Asian scary flicks).

The movie has been screened here for quite some time now, and that 5.45pm is the only screening it got for that day. When we arrived, I think there's only 10 peoples in the cineplex. Our seats pun have been taken, so bantai duduk je memane (dah macam free seating). But as the movie starts, more and more people flocked in, resulting it almost 80% full. Not bad for a movie nearing it's running end, huh! OK, nevertheless, here's the review:

One word sums it up - Dahsyat. It's up to the viewers to judge whether it's good or bad kind of dahsyat, but for me, this is one of the best monster movie I've watched. And I said monster movie, not thriller, because Hollywood always put monster flicks in the thriller genre. But The Host got almost everything. It's full of action, suspense, comedy (yes, you can laugh your head off in the most unbelievable situation), love (eh, no no, love xde), and of course - horror. One of the reason why it got so many element is the main player of the movie - a family, which include a bodoh-bodoh alang single dad, a determined grandfather, a no holds barred uncle and a rational auntie (hot auntie, btw), who will go against anything to save the single dad's daughter, who had been taken by the mutant monster. Not just explosion-kebaboom-CGI-laden monster movie, this is a monster movie with heart.

The plot was fast (with the monster first appear within the first 15 minutes), the cast was amazing and believable, the sound score and effects really rocks, and the CGI was almost perfect - no wonder, as it was brought the team behind The Day After Tomorrow. Maybe you won't be able to catch it in cinema, but please, if you find the VCD or DVD, give this a try.
