Sustainable

In the wake of "sustainability era" promoted in UKM (I don't know with other students, but sure is with architectural students) with UKMLESTARI and such but has yet to produce anything concretely visible now (maybe they're still in R&D process, after all, this is a long shot campaign), I was surprised to learn that USM has already step forward - by BANNING all styrofoam food containers in it's campus. Wow, that is one drastic, but bold and GOOD move! I'm always a hater for the styrofoam since like, ever. Not only it's aesthetically ugly, but it also Earth unfriendly and dangerous for your health guys!

Styrofoam takes more that a thousand years to decompose. It's a CENTURY! So, can we just burn them? No, because then, toxic smoke will be produced.

And, taken from a blog,

Why avoid the use of styrofoam (or polystyrene)?

Research studies have found that when plastic/styrofoam comes in contact with certain foods, molecules in the plastic (called styrene) can leach into the food or beverage.

Apparently the higher the fat content, the higher the migration of styrene into the food. Styrene also leaks faster when
the food or drinks are hot, or
the food gets heated up in the container, or
the food contains acidic substances (eg tomoto sauce), or
the food contains alcohol.
Studies suggest that styrene mimics estrogen in the body and can therefore disrupt normal hormone functions, possibly contributing to thyroid problems, menstrual irregularities, and other hormone-related problems, as well as breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Scary, huh? So until your university/college take the same step, you can do your part by limiting the use of styrofoam container.

There will be a mock-up interview for the English class next Monday, and we should wear f*ckin formal. Sucks.
