RIP Michael Jackson

It was around 5.50am when I read a Facebook status update from a journalist friend saying "Is Michael Jackson dead or just hospitalized?". I went "what"?

Quickly surf to Perezhilton and Eonline website, both are running reports that Michael has been rushed to UCLA Medical Center after suffering a cardiac arrest (heart attack). Only TMZ went on to report that he's dead. I went WHAT???

The original Charlie's Angels Farrah Fawcett has just passed away due to cancer a few hours earlier. But Michael Jackson? No one - I mean no one - ever saw this coming. The last time I remember a prominent figure's sudden death was waaayyy back in 1997 when Princess Diana dies from car crash in Paris. Celebrity twitters notification at Eonline was rolling non stop with Twitter status updates from celebrities from Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson, Fred Durst, Katy Perry, Khloe Kardashian, Kristie Alley, Emmy Rossum, Ashton Kutcher and others, all of whom resoundingly in state of disbelief, and no other news agency dared to confirm the news as there was no official statement coming from Michael's rep or UCLA officials.

CNN reported that Michael was in coma, for a moment, while more and more online news like CBS News and Los Angeles Times confirming the TMZ news. But media agencies from Google News were obviously in dilemma whether to run with the "death" news or not. Around 6.45am, Eonline finally ran the story.

Riuh Pagi ERA changed it's usual bubbly tone to a slow announcement by Aznil saying that "Kami di ERA turut berasa terkejut di atas berita kematian superstar Michael Jackson walaupun masih belum disahkan" but already changing it's playlist for the morning to Michael's tunes. And Din Beramboi was nowhere to be heard.

CNN finally ran the story around 7.30am when a coroner from the hospital confirmed the news. Aznil repeated the same announcement every 10 minutes or so and kept in touch with Astro Awani representative for any developing story until CNN confirmed it. CNN brought live streaming of video coverage on it's website showing the outdoors of UCLA where huge amount of fans starts turning up.

After a few years living in seclusion following his acquital from child molestation prosecution (even rumour of his conversion to Islam), Michael Jackson looks ready to step back into the spotlight and announcing his 50-date comeback tour which will kick off this coming July 13th in O2 Arena in London.

RIP Michael Jackson.

Update: 12 hours after his death, Michael's albums are dominating 7 out of 10 most downloaded albums on iTunes Music Story at the moment.

Good job! This entry summarizes MJ's death in short. Better than some of our local news portals.
