A Rumi That Could Be Roomier

Yes folks, after almost 5 disconnected, freaking hot summer days (tu dia, berangan summer), I came back from RUMI 2009 Architectural Workshop XXI several days ago with thousands of stories and millions of morals. Of course I'm not going to blab everything here, some things are better kept to ourselves. I was looking back at my Olympiarch 2006 entry and BOY HOW MUCH FREE TIME I HAD BACK THEN! I certainly don't possess that zest and energy to post such photodiary anymore. Adding to the fact that I'm not a participant this time.. just an innocent observer (motif innocent?). Preparation pun xdapat turut menolong... sori ya junior2ku. I got some work to do back home.

But having been in what's dubbed by many as 'the best' workshop (Olympiarch) before, I have to be honest here - this time it falls short on many aspects. Maybe because of the dire state of current economy, or sponsorship problems - the organizer knew better. But that shall be no excuse to the "pale" atmosphere of the workshop this time. They should get the music to play all day and more booths opened to give life to the main venues like the dataran and amphitheatre.

Nevermind about the hot weather or the fact that there's thousands of mosquitoes at the college rooms, we know it's beyond your control. But the pathetic water level "dripping" from the showerheads? Really, you can't do anything about that? (This really freaked me out: I was flushing the toilet, than it's like 8 COCKROACHES coming down with the flushed water into the bowl, and crawling back up to the toilet. I SWEAR I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE TERRIFIED.) The food was kinda bad too, luckily I'm best at adapting. And Beh's car came handy to get our midnight meal. But for those who just completed a module or exhausted after performance, getting a single piece of chipsmore for your so-called "supper" and do not have means of transport to go eating out? There's no sundry shops nearby the college or faculty, for God's sake. Kesian budak-budak kelaparan tau. But I have to give credit where credit is due: the organizers are very warm and friendly - it's like they knew we're not so comfortable and try to make it up by smiling all day.

Technical glitches overshadowing the events held at Dewan Sri Budiman... dari opening, performance until closing, bunyi microphone berdesing dan speaker meletup menghiasi acara. Talking about the performance - what can I say, suma kene demam Britain's Got Talent kah? Lots of street dancers a-la Diversity and Flawless - walaupun berapa kerat je yang benar2 sharp movementnya. Overall, from the two nights I observed, there's a clear line separating the performances into 3 categories

1. The sketch - involve a heavy usage of dialogues, lots of humor elements, with the exeptance of UM, almost all IPTAs went with this type of performance.
2. The surreal - most IPTS prefer this type of perfomance, with huge reliance of audio visual and lighting element and less dialogue.
3. The sampah - refusing to name any (yang pergi tau sendiri), but this 2 institutions put up a full-blown, awkward, syok sendiri performance, totally unrelated to the given concept. Its like watching a disaster happening before your eyes. Nak je blackoutkan dewan.

For UKM? Haha I would say I'm pretty surprised. Maybe sebelum ni tengok latihan je. Things turned out better than I expected. The crowds are pretty supportive too.

So at the end, UKM won nearly all categories that we went for - Best Booth, Best Actress (for perfomance - bravo Yinto), and Special Mention for installation (I think sebab tak cukup requirement 3m x 3m kot). We also tried out for Photography but competition was so stiff. Then tak cukup masa untuk join in other PAM categories. InsyaAllah tahun depan ada lagi, kan?

Penat cakap panjang-panjang, nak tengok gambar? Silalah ke sini.

P/S: Results were already out during the closing ceremony but my convocation fees are blocking mine! Aargh!

ya, we've all known about the blog, and regularly visited it. we are currently underway to lobby ourselves as the host of next workshop. so, we need as much response from our fellow archi students regarding previous workshops in order to successfully organize them next year.
