2009 Top 10 in Malaysian Cinemas

I was planning to do this countdown as part of my year end review for 2009 but the website that I follows weirdly lack of data updates from Malaysian box office during that time. I just checked it and glad to find that it's back. So, here's what our loyal cinemagoers watched most last year.

Top 10 International Movies
1. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - RM26.45 mil
2. 2012 - RM25.29 mil
3. Avatar (including 2010 grosses) - RM24.21 mil
4. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant - RM13.61 mil
5. Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins - RM13.09 mil
6. Fast and Furious - RM10.09 mil
7. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian - RM9.50 mil
8. G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra - RM9.44 mil
9. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs - RM8.17 mil
10. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - RM7.82 mil

Vampires is nowhere as hot as their assistants.
Hmm... this is one interesting list. There's something missing here - oh yes, the frenetic Twilight Saga: New Moon (which actually ended up in the close 11th place). So I guess the vampire craze had not really catch Malaysia. But if so, then how does the trashy Cirque du Freak - which I guess added "The Vampire's Assistant" on its title just for the sole purpose of milking (or blooding) the vampire's cow, took more than RM13 mil is just beyond my imagination.

I defeated BOTH Edward and Jacob, Bella. How 'bout that?

Franchises galore.
As expected, except for 2012, Avatar and the aforementioned Vampire, the rest of the list were made up of movies based either on existed franchise and sequels, pretty much the same trend we saw across the globe.

Top 10 Local Movies
1. Geng: Pengembaraan Bermula - RM6.20 mil
2. Jangan Pandang Belakang Congkak - RM6.09 mil
3. Bohsia: Jangan Pilih Jalan Hitam - RM4.14 mil
4. Papadom - RM3.44 mil
5. Jangan Tegur - RM3.42 mil
6. Santau - RM3.36 mil
7. Senario the Movie Episode 2: Beach Boys - RM3.10 mil
8. Sifu & Tongga - RM2.57 mil
9. Syurga Cinta - RM2.38 mil
10. Pisau Cukur - RM2.30 mil

Oh my Dior! People actually watch us! I thought urban comedies were out of touch with most Malaysians.

Cumulative grosses total top 10 local releases saw a 30% increase from RM29 mil in 2008 to RM37 mil last year, a good sign of local cinema appreciation from the moviegoers. But what they chose to appreciate is something else. While Geng: Pengembaraan Bermula's reign on top broke the producer's moral mentality that kids movie don't sell and hopefully will pave way for other quality 3D movies in the years to come, and Best Picture winner Papadom's comfortable top 5 placing, some quality productions were left in the dark - case in point, Yasmin Ahmad's Talentime RM0.42mil and her last, posthumous movie, Muallaf did even worse - RM 0.04mil despite months of tributes showering after her passing - considering even the I-can't-believe-people-will-line-up-to-see-that-trash Jalang scores better with RM0.68 mil. Shame on you, perverts!
